Proposed Vegetative Roofing System Standard Being Developed by ASTM Roofing and Waterproofing Committee

PRESS RELEASE-

Proposed Vegetative Roofing System Standard Being Developed by ASTM Roofing and Waterproofing Committee

The ongoing focus on sustainability in construction has contributed to greater interest in vegetative, or green, roof systems, in which traditional roofing material is replaced or supplemented with vegetation. A proposed new ASTM International standard will address an important aspect of designing this kind of roofing: determining the proper roofing and waterproofing membrane for a particular system.

The proposed new standard, ASTM WK29304, Guide for Selection of Roofing/Waterproofing Membranes for Vegetative Roof Systems, is currently being developed by Subcommittee D08.24 on Sustainability, part of ASTM International Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing.

“An effective or suitable membrane for a vegetative roof system will satisfy both the roofing and waterproofing requirements and functions for the building and also be an effective substrate that promotes the healthy growth and successful function of the vegetative roofing system,” says Michael Sexton, senior systems engineer, Firestone Building Products Co., and leader of the task group developing the proposed new standard.

According to Sexton, a suitable roofing and waterproofing membrane will resist damage to the building's roof envelope from common conditions such as excessive roof traffic, membrane abrasion and impact, plant root penetration, ultraviolet damage, exterior fire, thermal shock and wind events. In addition, a proper membrane would comply with local, state and federal building codes and meet the industry's test approval standards.

“The growing move towards preserving our environment and reducing the effects of the urban heat island have encouraged many building owners and communities to select vegetative roofs,” says Sexton. “As such, each and every component plays an important role in the success, not only of the roofing, but to maintain and enhance the building envelope performance. The proper selection of a waterproofing barrier for the roof is critical to the success on both fronts.”

Sexton says that all interested parties are invited to participate in the development of WK29304. He also notes that D08.24 is working closely with ASTM Committee E60 on Sustainability on topics of mutual interest for roofs.

Papers are Invited for ASTM International Seventh Symposium on Roofing

ASTM International
W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., -Papers are invited for the Seventh Symposium on Roofing Research and Standards Development, which will be held Dec. 4-5, 2011, at the Tampa Marriott Waterside in Tampa, Fla. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing, the symposium will be held in conjunction with the Dec. 4-7 standards development meetings of the committee.

The symposium provides a forum for contributing to the fundamental understanding of acceptable roof performance, with the primary emphasis being current research and development work. The symposium will center on the influence of both laboratory and field investigations in the development of standards for roofing and waterproofing materials and systems.

The symposium is intended to address topics describing research and standards development for both low-sloped and steep roofing systems including the following: roof system durability and service life prediction; roofing in a sustainability era; synthetic single-ply roofing systems; polymer-modified and conventional built-up bituminous roofing; self-adhesive membrane roofing; liquid-applied membrane roofing; advances in reinforcing fabrics for bituminous roofing; advances in adhesion technology for synthetic and bituminous roofing; spray polyurethane foam roofing systems; metal roofing systems; performance of shingles, tiles and other steep roof coverings; wind and fire resistance; environmental factors such as cool roofing and vegetative (green) roofing; technology of roof coatings; impact of computer technology and simulation on roofing standards development; and advances in waterproofing.

Interested presenters must submit a 300-500 word abstract online at www.astm.org/D08symp1211.htm by May 4, 2010. Symposium chair Walter J. Rossiter will notify you by Aug. 4, 2010, of your paper's acceptability for presentation. Symposium presenters are required to submit their papers to the Journal of ASTM International (JAI). JAI is an online, peer-reviewed journal for the international scientific and engineering community (www.astm.org/JAI).

For more information, visit the symposium home page on the ASTM Web site (www.astm.org/D08symp1211.htm). For additional technical information, contact symposium chair Walter J. Rossiter Jr., Ph.D., National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, Md. (phone: 301-975-6719; walter.rossiter@nist.gov).

From Paint Square's Daily Newsletter-ASTM Adds Certification Programs

From my daily newsletter from Paintsquare comes this news about ASTM to offer product certification. This could be a direct challenge to ICC and their evaluation service...who would need a ICC report when ASTm certifies the product by testing it under it's own test standards...

Venerable standards developer ASTM International has announced that it will offer certification services for materials, products, services, systems and personnel.

The voluntary ASTM International Certification Programs, which the ASTM board authorized in October, are being launched in response to inquiries for ASTM to provide certification for independent, third-party demonstrations of compliance to standards.

Most of the demand has involved new standards development activities; some has come from those facing regulatory pressures to demonstrate standards compliance.

"The board agreed that the ability for the Society to offer certification programs as a part of ASTM's portfolio of services - similar to our successful proficiency testing and training programs - is important in remaining relevant in the changing global marketplace," explains James A. Thomas, president of ASTM International.

"This is the first step toward certification in ASTM's 111-year history. The board approved this initiative to satisfy the requirements of ASTM's diverse stakeholder community and to meet the needs of industries relying on ASTM International standards." READ THE REST OF THIS ARTICLE BY CLICKING HERE
