Consultants Comment on (Balcony) Glass Breakage at Austin W Hotel

For the second time this month glass panels on the balconies of the Austin W Hotel have broken and, as a result, the hotel will be replacing every balcony glass panel-nearly 1,000. This incident follows a similar one on June 10 when three people suffered minor injuries. No one was hurt yesterday, though five parked cars were damaged. A statement issued by the W Austin Hotel notes that "engineering and glass experts are investigating and we continue to cooperate with city officials …" At this time the reasons for the glass breakage have yet to be determined. Some in the glass industry say there are many possible causes of such incidents.

From Truthout-Ralph Nader: Koch Brothers Led Fight to Defend Formaldehyde Despite Carcinogenic Evidence (Video)

Ralph Nader: Koch Brothers Led Fight to Defend Formaldehyde Despite Carcinogenic Evidence (Video)

Amy Goodman, Juan Gonzalez and Ralph Nader, Democracy Now!: "The government has added formaldehyde to a list of known carcinogens, despite years of lobbying by the chemical industry. Formaldehyde is found in plastics and often used in plywood, particle board, mortuaries and hair salons. The government also said Friday that styrene, which is used in boats, bathtubs and in disposable foam plastic cups and plates, may cause cancer. The conservative billionaire Koch brothers have led the lobbying effort against labeling formaldehyde as a carcinogen. Georgia-Pacific, a subsidiary of Koch Industries, is one of the country's top producers of formaldehyde. We get reaction from longtime consumer advocate Ralph Nader."

Nail guns trigger a growing number of visits to the ER

Nail guns trigger a growing number of visits to the ER
Jun 28, 2011 5:02 PM

With its ability to shoot nail after nail at speeds approaching 500 feet per second, a nail gun should be treated like any deadly weapon. And with more and more homeowners arming themselves to attempt their own repairs, too many of those nails are ending up in the heads, hands or necks of the worker—or someone nearby.

The number of people with nail gun injuries who sought treatment in hospital emergency rooms increased from 12,000 to 42,000 between 1995 and 2005, according to one study based on data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Do-it-yourselfers account for many of those injuries but 20,000 pros are injured each year, says the National Association of Home Builders.

To reduce the number of injuries, the NAHB has developed a new Nail Gun Safety Card printed in both English and Spanish. Most importantly, learn how the nail gun operates before starting a task.

Owners face hefty repair bill on leaky condos-decks and roofs

Condo owners are facing a large repair bill for a newer southwest Calgary building that is already leaking.

An inspection at the Bella Vista Condominiums on 14 A Street in the neighbourhood of Bankview turned up building code violations, said Liberal MLA Ken Hehr.

Owners are facing bills of between $77,000 and $189,000 each to pay for repairs to the roof, eaves, balcony and parkade in a building where a one bedroom penthouse suite is currently listed for sale at $317,000.

Officials predict 'normal' wildfire season for Southern California

Citing bountiful winter rains, fire officials Thursday forecast a "normal" wildfire season but cautioned that Southern California's green hillsides could turn combustible in time for late summer's fire-inducing Santa Ana winds.

Emerging from a meeting of federal, state and local fire bosses, L.A. County Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby said the lush winter growth had already spawned 400 more fire starts than at this time last year and warned "we have to brace ourselves" for late-season fires.

OSHA renews Alliance with Sealant, Waterproofing and Restoration Institute

WASHINGTON – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration today renewed its Alliance with the Sealant, Waterproofing and Restoration Institute (SWRInstitute) that aims to reduce worker exposures to industry hazards such as falls, exposure to chemicals, and confined spaces.

"The compliance assistance materials created through this Alliance are good sources of safety and health information for employers and workers in the sealant, waterproofing and restoration industry," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels. "I expect the materials generated through the continuation of the Alliance to further assist employers and workers in recognizing and preventing hazardous working conditions."

OSHA and SWRInstitute have used the Alliance to develop a safety and health field manual that identifies key hazards and OSHA requirements for issues associated with sealant and waterproofing industry worksites, including competent person, aerial and scissor lift, excavation and trenching, fall protection, and respiratory protection.

The Alliance partners also worked jointly on OSHA's Safety and Health Topics Web page on the Sealant, Waterproofing and Restoration Industry, which lists construction standards that address requirements specific to this industry such as welding and cutting, fall protection, hazard communication and electrical.

With a two-year extension, the Alliance will continue to focus on advancing workplace safety and health by providing SWRInstitute members and others in the sealant, waterproofing, and restoration industry – including small businesses – with information, guidance and training to help protect worker safety and health.

SWRInstitute is a nonprofit corporation of over 230 commercial contractors, manufacturers and consultants of sealant, waterproofing and restoration products. More than 10,000 workers in this industry are SWRInstitute members.

Through the Alliance Program, OSHA works with groups committed to worker safety and health to prevent workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses. These groups include unions, consulates, trade or professional organizations, faith- and community-based organizations, businesses and educational institutions. OSHA and the groups work together to develop compliance assistance tools and resources, share information with workers and employers, and educate workers and employers about their rights and responsibilities. Alliance Program participants do not receive exemptions from OSHA programmed inspections.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure these conditions for America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards, and providing training, education and assistance. For more information, visit http://www.osha.gov.

DeckExpert.com obtains Nevada Coating Systems Granite Deck sample- fire test coming soon!

DeckExpert.com just obtained a sample of Nevada Coating Systems Granite Deck today.

Granite Deck is sold as a deck coating, but we've not seen any testing or evaluation reports to back up the manufacturer's claims.

We will be performing a small fire test to see what kind of fire resistance we might expect on a large scale.

We're always concerned about fire, especially on decks and escape routes like stairs. Testing will show how the product handles fire and a video of the test will allow consumers to determine whether they want the product on their decks and stairs.

Check back soon for our next video!

NewLook Certified Installer Training Class - Don't Miss Out!

Subject: NewLook Certified Installer Classes

June 2011

About NewLook

NewLook is the leading manufacturer of premium architectural and specialty decorative concrete solutions. Our superior systems have been proven since 1989 by industry professionals and property owners alike to restore and enhance the image of concrete.

NewLook was founded on the principles of innovation, sustainability and the belief that maintaining concrete should be convenient and affordable. Whether you are specifying or installing decorative concrete NewLook has a high-quality solution for you!

"I have used NewLook products since 2003 and have watched...many attempts by rival companies to copy NewLook's formulas. Fortunately for NewLook, these attempts have had dismal results in product integrity and overall sales [NewLook] is truly a unique, one-of-a kind, multi-faceted product and formula. And it's the only brand STAINTEC chooses to purchase and support."

Glen Roman,

Owner, STAINTEC; CA

www.staintec.com

"The moment I started doing decorative concrete work I was advised to familiarize myself with NewLook and their products. Over five years later, NewLook products are still the only ones I use. I've gotten to the point that most of my pictures in my portolio are of NewLook applications. Customers like my Before & After pictures so much they don't even look at the NewLook color chart and ask me to pick colors for them. I'm a self-employed contractor and Certified NewLook Installer. NewLook's stains are perfect for me. With a minimal amount of tools and overhead, I can put down NewLook five days a week and not break a sweat."

Wayne Morse

Owner AM Resurfacing; Sacramento, CA www.amresurfacing.com

"I have over 25 years of professional experience in custom and decorative concrete and my motto has always been 'do it right the first time'! But I'm always looking for ways to do it better and expand my horizons: In 2007 I began using NewLook's Concrete Color Stains and I was hooked on the first job. New construction, restoration, repair...it does it all and my customers love the results. Honestly, I have used other products by never achieved the phenomenal results I ALWAYS get from NewLook stains. I average 25% to 30% better coverage than other brands with less labor. That's real savings! Better adhesion too; NewLook stains do not come off unless you want them to, unlike other comparable products. NewLook's stains have better color and consistency; side by side you can see the difference. The best service, advice and solutions form the guys who make it--not some salesman. Ask anyone who knows me; I won't use anything else."

You may be asking yourself, "What's in it for me?" Here's a little secret: we like having you in class, but that's not really how we make our money! We earn our living by supplying material for your contracting projects; so we need you to be the best in the business! It's a win-win proposition! Once class is over, call or e-mail with any questions that may come up on your projects–we are available by phone or online to provide you with whatever materials or tools you may need.

Ready to become a part of the NewLook team? Act fast–-we only accept up to 10 students (or less) to ensure the personal attention you need to master the NewLook Concrete Color Maintenance system.

The cost of all our workshops includes all materials used during class, in addition to material to take home after class. Tools will be provided. Breakfast and lunch will be served. We limit this small, intimate class to 10 students (or less) so you are guaranteed to receive our full personal and professional attention when you attend the training.

What's the difference between the Certified Installer Training and a typical demo?

The biggest difference is the level of training and depth of knowledge covered. CIT classes offer comprehensive, rigourous, hands-on training on the entire NewLook system of products*, including advanced faux finish techniques. Demos are, by definition, a less involved demonstration that does not typically include an in-depth approach to training on ALL NewLook products. Attendees of the CIT class must demonstrate that they can successfully instal NewLook products, unlike demos. CIT attendees must also pass the training classes and NewLook authorizes them to use NewLook's trademarks in the promotion of their business; installers do not receive the same benefit from attending demonstrations. NewLook also promotes its Certified Installers both on GetNewLook.com and to installation job opportunities that specify NewLook products.

How do I register?

Contact Jacob at NewLook for additional information or to register for the next class:
jacob@getnewlook.com
(801) 886-9495

NOTE: Registration must occur within 7 days before the class to reserve your spot. NewLook reserves the right to reschedule or cancel the class at any time.

*While NewLook Certified Installer Training classes do not include hands-on training on the NanoSet Polishing System, they do include a presentation and general demonstration of how to install these products.

CSLB Goes Undercover to Sting 11 in Woodland
Repeat offender among those caught contracting without a license in Yolo County

SACRAMENTO – The Contractors State License Board (CSLB), in partnership with the Yolo County District Attorney's Office and Department of Insurance, caught 11 unlicensed operators in an undercover sting in Woodland on June 8, 2011.

Members of CSLB's Statewide Investigative Fraud Team (SWIFT) posed as homeowners and invited suspected phony contractors to a vacant home to bid on home improvement projects, including landscaping, fencing, and painting. If the bid totaled more than $500 in labor and materials and the suspect was not state-licensed, they were given a notice to appear (NTA) in court to face misdemeanor charges of contracting without a license. Some also face misdemeanor charges of illegal advertising. State law requires contractors to put their license numbers in all advertisements. Those who are not licensed may advertise to perform jobs valued at least than $500, but their ads must state that they are not licensed.

Robert John Wachs, who received an NTA for contracting without a license after he bid on a painting project, is no stranger to CSLB stings. Wachs, 57, of Knights Landing, has a pending court case in October 2011, on charges of contracting without a license after he was caught during the CSLB Fall Blitz in September 2009.

"Consumers need to be aware of the risks they take when working with the unlicensed," said Registrar Steve Sands.  "This sting operation is a prime example of how violations of state consumer protection laws will not be tolerated by CSLB and its partnering agencies."

CSLB urges consumers to follow these helpful tips before hiring anyone to do work on their home or property:

·                     Hire only licensed contractors and ask to see their license and a photo ID to verify their identity.

·                     Always check the license number on CSLB's website at www.cslb.ca.gov or www.CheckTheLicenseFirst.com to make sure the license is in good standing.

·                     Don't pay more than 10 percent or $1,000, whichever is less, as a down payment.  There is an exception for about two dozen licensees who carry special bonds to protect consumers.  These exceptions are noted on CSLB's website.

·                     Don't pay in cash, and don't let payments get ahead of the work.

·                     Get at least three bids, check references, and get a written contract.

The following suspects are scheduled for arraignment at the Yolo County Superior Court at 213 Third Street in Woodland on August 31, 2011 at 8:30 a.m.:

Uses—Identifies the scope of the Evaluation Report and relates the product evaluated to code provisions.
Description—Provides a general description of the product and its features, such as length, thickness, etc.
Installation—Identifies general and often specific requirements to help the inspector ensure the product is installed properly according to the code requirements or acceptance criteria.
Conditions of Use—Statement that the product, as described in the Evaluation Report, complies with or is a suitable alternative to the requirements of the applicable code and a list of conditions under which the report is issued.

From Design and Durability-South Coast Air District OKs Plan for VOC Limits on Coatings Colorants

The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) last week enacted the nation's first VOC regulation on colorants for architectural and industrial maintenance coatings.

In approving a number of amendments to the district's Rule 1113 on architectural and industrial maintenance coatings, the district also enacted lower VOC content limits on a number of specialty coatings. Also approved was the elimination of the rule's VOC "averaging" provision, which gives coatings manufacturing companies a flexibility option in meeting the rule's stringent VOC-content provisions. The averaging provision will be eliminated on Jan. 1, 2015.
