Bamboozled: Scurrilous waterproofer resilient as a roach

Like bedbugs or rodents or even dandelions, some things just keep coming back.

This time, we're talking about unethical basement waterproofing companies.

Last year we profiled the experiences of customers who did business with Aqua-Dri

 Basement Waterproofing and Thrifty Waterproofing, both of which were connected to a 

contractor named Al Demola.

Demola appears to be back.

On Aug. 14, 2011, nearly 6 inches of rain fell in Freehold, flooding the finished basement of Aleta and Jack Heir.

They hired a company to pump out the water.

A week later, another 3.5 inches came down, flooding their basement once again.

"By that time, the news was full of dire warnings about Hurricane Irene, the new moon, saturated 

water tables and a perfect storm of flood conditions," said Aleta Heir, 65. "Though our finished basement 

was gone, we were terrified of the damage to the home."

The next day, the Heirs saw an ad for Water Shield Waterproofing of Bridgewater, a company that 

boasted it was the largest in the nation, with 24-hour emergency service.

They set an appointment, and a rep came the next day.

"After a lengthy examination of our basement, he told us that his company could dry the 

basement and give us a lifetime warranty times three generations," she said. "I commented

 that it's only as good as the lifetime of his company, at which point he told me that Water Shield

 has been around for 30 years and did $140 million in business in the past year."

Mer-Kote's Shurdeck & Weatherdeck Get New ICC-ES Reports Issued

Mer-Kote, a division of Parex-LaHabra of Anaheim, recently received new ICC-ES reports for their Shurdeck concrete/metal lath deck system and for Weatherdeck, their floating slip sheet system. 

Both systems are rated as Class A roof coverings, meeting the code requirements for fire retardant decking. 

Both systems are also rated for One Hour construction as well, a separate classification. 

It's been a long time for Mer-Kote to receive these reports and I'm sure that they are relieved to finally have them.

Condo Fire Caused by Cigarette Butts on a Balcony Caused $75,000 In Damages Over the Weekend

Here is a reason to ask is it time to ban smoking on condo balcony's?

Tinder-dry conditions are prompting warnings to properly dispose of 

cigarette butts.

"Right now our conditions are extreme, and it just takes one of those into a

 grassy area, bush area, into a ditch or any area that still has the dead grass

 material and it can spread very rapidly. It's extremely combustable," said Tom Karpa, 

Edmonton's fire marshall.

"I drive into town and I see people flicking them out of their vehicle and they don't know 

where the (butts) are going, they just bounce on the side of the road."

Karpa said a condo fire caused by cigarette butts on a balcony caused $75,000 over the weekend.

 He also pointed to a multi-million condo fire in the city's south end earlier this year.

There are currently 57 wildfires raging in the province, with three pegged as out of control.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is seeking nearly $1.4 million from the developer of a 17-unit Williamsburg condominium project that is allegedly "rife with construction defects," including leaks, faulty windows and the use of flammable material on the roof, according to court documents obtained by The Real Deal.

"Condominium purchasers were defrauded by a developer who chose to cut corners at the expense of people's safety," Schneiderman said in a statement toThe Real Deal.

Schwartz, who also helped develop Williamsburg's Warehouse 11 condo, could not immediately be reached for comment. Calls to a business at the same address as Maspeth Plaza and with a number for a Yitzchok Schwartz who lives in Williamsburg were not immediately returned.

Unit owners hired an engineering firm in January 2011 to evaluate the alleged defects, and the firm discovered an estimated $1.2 million worth of damage, ranging from improper roof installation, to "moisture penetrations" in the façade, to air and water seeping through the windows and balcony doors, the suit says.
