DURADEK Decking Products Qualify for LEEDS Points

For Immediate Release – December 15, 2009 – Surrey, BC

Duradek is very pleased to announce that our products qualify for LEED points

LEED-certified buildings and products qualifying for LEED points are the hot topics in today’s environmentally-conscious climate.
Duradek is very pleased to be a GREEN leader in our industry and can qualify for LEED points for Heat Island Effect on Roofs as well as points for Regional Materials.

We already know that, despite the ongoing controversy surrounding PVC, the cradle to grave definition of ‘Green’ shows PVC products (and Duradek) in a much more favorable light than the alternative products.

-          Duradek is lightweight, so less structural requirements are necessary to support it and less energy is consumed in transportation as compared to EPDM and concrete pavers.
-          Duradek is a one-step application which compares favorably to the multiple application and re-application requirements of a liquid applied system, saving many job trips which in turn consumes much less energy.
-          Duradek has a long life span, which means less on-going restoration requirement of the structure and less materials going into the landfill.
-          Duradek has no chemicals that will leach into the ground at the end of life, unlike pressure treated wood.

To read more about Duradek being GREEN, please go to www.duradek.com/duradekisgreen.html?
Or call 1-866-591-5594 for more details

ENDURO-KOTE MOVES INTO THEIR NEW CORPORATE OFFICES/WAREHOUSE

ENDURO-KOTE has moved their headquarters over to North Patt Street in Anaheim.
Chris Proulx, ceo of Enduro-kote gave me a tour earlier this week of their new building.

The new headquaters gives Enduro-Kote room to grow, with plenty of office and warehouse space to stock supplies and allow for future expansion.

See Enduro-Kote's website for more information on their line of waterproofing and deck coatings at www.enduro-kote.com.

Congrats to Enduro-Kote on their expansion and new building!

DeWalt's Trade/Code/Exam and Certification Series of Books Are a Great Tool!

A couple months ago I got an email from Bobby Person at VCengage Learning. They are the published of DeWalt's series of books-on Building Codes, Electrical Codes, etc.Construction Reference guides, exam guides etc. are all covered.
Cengage was looking for someone to write a book on building decks, which they thought I might be qualified and interested...sad to say I'm not a deck builder but as I posted a blog on the search, Bobby was good enough to mail me a couple of books to look at.

I asked for the Building Code Reference

and the Construction Professional Reference book

and got them shortly after our email exchange.
Reading through these 2 books, I am left with a very good impression...I especially like the Building Code Reference book, it's wire bound binding and heavy glossy pages look like they'll take a lot of abuse and use in the field which is where they should be used!

Take a look at the whole series, maybe one of their many available titles would interest you...here are a few I thought would be of interest. Disclosure-I received 2 books free from Dewalk/Cengage. No other compensation is expected.

QUEST BUILDING PRODUCTS/KRETUS ANNOUNCES Lava Flow Traing Class This Wednesday, December 16th in Anaheim!

Tell 'em Deck Expert sent ya...

Wanke, Industrial, Commercial, Residential, Inc. (WICR) Is No Longer a Listed Applicator for Mer-Kote!

Did Hell freeze over? I missed it I guess...

during a website update at DeckExpert.com, I was posting the Mer-Kote approved applicators list to the deck coating installers page...and I noticed that it had been revamped into a easier to read list...and then I was reading the list of applicators...and then I noticed that WICR wasn't listed.

I inquired with a source at Mer-Ko who confirmed that WICR is not a listed applicator anymore.

WICR was the grandaddy installer of Mer-Kote; in the days of Dave Krubinksi as sales manager, WICR was THE Mer-Kote applicator, a force to be reckoned with...

but Dave Krubinksi left Mer-Kote after Parex bought them, and things changed for the better at Mer-Kote with new management and a new way of doing business...less good ole boy style and more like an open and free market.

So how does that effect you Mr. Homeowner or Homeowner Asssociation? Well that's better left to be said by Mer-Kote, but my opinion is that any warranty written by WICR, if it meets Mer-Kotes standards and was registered with mer-Kote, is that your ok. You'll need to have your decks maintained by a listed applicator. WICR cannot back any factory warranty up so far as I know...

If your warranty is written and backed by WICR, your at their mercy...check with Mer-Kote and see what might be done...bring or send a copy of your warranty to them.

Don't forget, Central Coast Waterproofing is a listed applicator of Mer-Kote and can back your warranty with factory approved service and materials. Call Bill Leys at 805-801-2380.

Listed applicators for Mer-Kote can be found at Mer-Kote's website.

"Building businesses one person at a time"

From Paint Square's Daily Newsletter-ASTM Adds Certification Programs

From my daily newsletter from Paintsquare comes this news about ASTM to offer product certification. This could be a direct challenge to ICC and their evaluation service...who would need a ICC report when ASTm certifies the product by testing it under it's own test standards...

Read on

Venerable standards developer ASTM International has announced that it will offer certification services for materials, products, services, systems and personnel.

The voluntary ASTM International Certification Programs, which the ASTM board authorized in October, are being launched in response to inquiries for ASTM to provide certification for independent, third-party demonstrations of compliance to standards.

Most of the demand has involved new standards development activities; some has come from those facing regulatory pressures to demonstrate standards compliance.

"The board agreed that the ability for the Society to offer certification programs as a part of ASTM's portfolio of services - similar to our successful proficiency testing and training programs - is important in remaining relevant in the changing global marketplace," explains James A. Thomas, president of ASTM International.

"This is the first step toward certification in ASTM's 111-year history. The board approved this initiative to satisfy the requirements of ASTM's diverse stakeholder community and to meet the needs of industries relying on ASTM International standards."
