Nail guns trigger a growing number of visits to the ER

Nail guns trigger a growing number of visits to the ER
Jun 28, 2011 5:02 PM

With its ability to shoot nail after nail at speeds approaching 500 feet per second, a nail gun should be treated like any deadly weapon. And with more and more homeowners arming themselves to attempt their own repairs, too many of those nails are ending up in the heads, hands or necks of the worker—or someone nearby.

The number of people with nail gun injuries who sought treatment in hospital emergency rooms increased from 12,000 to 42,000 between 1995 and 2005, according to one study based on data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Do-it-yourselfers account for many of those injuries but 20,000 pros are injured each year, says the National Association of Home Builders.

To reduce the number of injuries, the NAHB has developed a new Nail Gun Safety Card printed in both English and Spanish. Most importantly, learn how the nail gun operates before starting a task.

Owners face hefty repair bill on leaky condos-decks and roofs

Condo owners are facing a large repair bill for a newer southwest Calgary building that is already leaking.

An inspection at the Bella Vista Condominiums on 14 A Street in the neighbourhood of Bankview turned up building code violations, said Liberal MLA Ken Hehr.

Owners are facing bills of between $77,000 and $189,000 each to pay for repairs to the roof, eaves, balcony and parkade in a building where a one bedroom penthouse suite is currently listed for sale at $317,000.

Officials predict 'normal' wildfire season for Southern California

Citing bountiful winter rains, fire officials Thursday forecast a "normal" wildfire season but cautioned that Southern California's green hillsides could turn combustible in time for late summer's fire-inducing Santa Ana winds.

Emerging from a meeting of federal, state and local fire bosses, L.A. County Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby said the lush winter growth had already spawned 400 more fire starts than at this time last year and warned "we have to brace ourselves" for late-season fires.

OSHA renews Alliance with Sealant, Waterproofing and Restoration Institute

WASHINGTON – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration today renewed its Alliance with the Sealant, Waterproofing and Restoration Institute (SWRInstitute) that aims to reduce worker exposures to industry hazards such as falls, exposure to chemicals, and confined spaces.

"The compliance assistance materials created through this Alliance are good sources of safety and health information for employers and workers in the sealant, waterproofing and restoration industry," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels. "I expect the materials generated through the continuation of the Alliance to further assist employers and workers in recognizing and preventing hazardous working conditions."

OSHA and SWRInstitute have used the Alliance to develop a safety and health field manual that identifies key hazards and OSHA requirements for issues associated with sealant and waterproofing industry worksites, including competent person, aerial and scissor lift, excavation and trenching, fall protection, and respiratory protection.

The Alliance partners also worked jointly on OSHA's Safety and Health Topics Web page on the Sealant, Waterproofing and Restoration Industry, which lists construction standards that address requirements specific to this industry such as welding and cutting, fall protection, hazard communication and electrical.

With a two-year extension, the Alliance will continue to focus on advancing workplace safety and health by providing SWRInstitute members and others in the sealant, waterproofing, and restoration industry – including small businesses – with information, guidance and training to help protect worker safety and health.

SWRInstitute is a nonprofit corporation of over 230 commercial contractors, manufacturers and consultants of sealant, waterproofing and restoration products. More than 10,000 workers in this industry are SWRInstitute members.

Through the Alliance Program, OSHA works with groups committed to worker safety and health to prevent workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses. These groups include unions, consulates, trade or professional organizations, faith- and community-based organizations, businesses and educational institutions. OSHA and the groups work together to develop compliance assistance tools and resources, share information with workers and employers, and educate workers and employers about their rights and responsibilities. Alliance Program participants do not receive exemptions from OSHA programmed inspections.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure these conditions for America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards, and providing training, education and assistance. DeckExpert.com obtains Nevada Coating Systems Granite Deck sample- fire test coming soon!

DeckExpert.com just obtained a sample of Nevada Coating Systems Granite Deck today.

Granite Deck is sold as a deck coating, but we've not seen any testing or evaluation reports to back up the manufacturer's claims.

We will be performing a small fire test to see what kind of fire resistance we might expect on a large scale.

We're always concerned about fire, especially on decks and escape routes like stairs. Testing will show how the product handles fire and a video of the test will allow consumers to determine whether they want the product on their decks and stairs.

Check back soon for our next video!
