Consultants Comment on (Balcony) Glass Breakage at Austin W Hotel

For the second time this month glass panels on the balconies of the Austin W Hotel have broken and, as a result, the hotel will be replacing every balcony glass panel-nearly 1,000. This incident follows a similar one on June 10 when three people suffered minor injuries. No one was hurt yesterday, though five parked cars were damaged. A statement issued by the W Austin Hotel notes that "engineering and glass experts are investigating and we continue to cooperate with city officials …" At this time the reasons for the glass breakage have yet to be determined. Some in the glass industry say there are many possible causes of such incidents.

From Truthout-Ralph Nader: Koch Brothers Led Fight to Defend Formaldehyde Despite Carcinogenic Evidence (Video)

Ralph Nader: Koch Brothers Led Fight to Defend Formaldehyde Despite Carcinogenic Evidence (Video)

Amy Goodman, Juan Gonzalez and Ralph Nader, Democracy Now!: "The government has added formaldehyde to a list of known carcinogens, despite years of lobbying by the chemical industry. Formaldehyde is found in plastics and often used in plywood, particle board, mortuaries and hair salons. The government also said Friday that styrene, which is used in boats, bathtubs and in disposable foam plastic cups and plates, may cause cancer. The conservative billionaire Koch brothers have led the lobbying effort against labeling formaldehyde as a carcinogen. Georgia-Pacific, a subsidiary of Koch Industries, is one of the country's top producers of formaldehyde. We get reaction from longtime consumer advocate Ralph Nader."

Nail guns trigger a growing number of visits to the ER

Nail guns trigger a growing number of visits to the ER
Jun 28, 2011 5:02 PM

With its ability to shoot nail after nail at speeds approaching 500 feet per second, a nail gun should be treated like any deadly weapon. And with more and more homeowners arming themselves to attempt their own repairs, too many of those nails are ending up in the heads, hands or necks of the worker—or someone nearby.

The number of people with nail gun injuries who sought treatment in hospital emergency rooms increased from 12,000 to 42,000 between 1995 and 2005, according to one study based on data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Do-it-yourselfers account for many of those injuries but 20,000 pros are injured each year, says the National Association of Home Builders.

To reduce the number of injuries, the NAHB has developed a new Nail Gun Safety Card printed in both English and Spanish. Most importantly, learn how the nail gun operates before starting a task.

Owners face hefty repair bill on leaky condos-decks and roofs

Condo owners are facing a large repair bill for a newer southwest Calgary building that is already leaking.

An inspection at the Bella Vista Condominiums on 14 A Street in the neighbourhood of Bankview turned up building code violations, said Liberal MLA Ken Hehr.

Owners are facing bills of between $77,000 and $189,000 each to pay for repairs to the roof, eaves, balcony and parkade in a building where a one bedroom penthouse suite is currently listed for sale at $317,000.
