From Jason Horne's Blog - Some issues with composite decking!

As we say here at DeckExpert.com, solid surface decking systems are tried and true, there haven't been the rash of massive issues with various compsoite decks such as Trex.

Solid surface Division 7 pedestrian traffic coatings give you a waterproof areas below and for less money that many composite decks will cost you.

From Jason's blog, some things to consider about composite decking

Are you considering rebuilding your deck the composite decking?  Here are some things to consider before you commit to this relatively new material.

I recently was on a home inspection for a home that was approximately 10 years old.  During the inspection I was looking at 2 decks that were part of the home.  These decks were constructed of a composite wood material that has become popularized as a maintenance free alternative to wood.  We had come across several issues during the inspection of the deck. One issue of note was that the boards where cracking and splitting along the edges.  I attribute this to spacing.  Like most decking wood or composite there needs to be some space for expansion and contraction.  The other issue that we noted was the deterioration of the wood joists under the composite decking.  This was due to the drying qualities of composite decking. Wood decking will absorb moisture and release to the air around it. Composite decking does not absorb water.  Moisture that gets trapped under the decking and on top of the wood joists would tend to stay there and keep the joist from drying properly.  Wood that is not allowed to dry properly will be more susceptible to rot and decay.

Here are some other common issues with composite decking.

Cost:  Compared to traditional wood decking ($15/ sq. ft.), composite decking is considerably more expensive ($30-$36/ sq. ft.).  This cost is for materials.  The labor cost tends to be a bit higher due to additional steps that are required during installation.  Composite decking requires the joist to be closer together then that of traditional wood. If the composite lumber is not properly supported it tends to bow and warp.  Each board must be pre-drilled during the fastening process.  These add to the cost of materials and additional labor times.

From The Hindu- Water-proofing the terrace

Wherever you live in the world, water leaks into buildings...

Here is an article from The Hindu in India-

SATHYA PRAKASH VARANASHI

Normally, the top surface gets finished with thread lines to stop any possible crack from developing across the surface.

Ask any engineer contractor to list areas of concern and we are almost sure to find water seepage and terrace water-proofing to be among the top. From the very local solutions like mud layer poured with lime slurry, a traditional cost-effective solution, to the latest research on chemical-based methods have all been explored, yet no one idea stands out as 'the' solution. Possibly, we cannot list varied eco-friendly options here, but some cost-effective ideas exist and are in practice.

By far, the most cost-effective method appears to be treating the concrete roof on the same evening of concreting, when it is still not hard set.

The Hindu, started in 1878 as a weekly, became a daily in 1889 and from then on has been steadily growing to the circulation of 15,58,379 copies (ABC: July-December 2012) and a readership of about 22.58 lakhs.

From JLC - Standard Writing Groups Sue In Copyright Claim

Saw this in JLC and I must say I agree, standards should be free and available to anyone. Support PublicResource.org!

"Public.Resource.org, a website founded by activist Carl Malamud, has been making copies of state and local building codes available on the Internet for years, free of charge. As legal authority for the practice, Malamud cites a Federal appeals court decision in the case of Veeck v. SBCCI, where the judges ruled that building codes, once they are adopted as law by states, enter the public domain and can't be copyrighted. The court ruled: "May a code-writing organization prevent a website operator from posting the text of a model code where the code is identified simply as the building code of a city that enacted the model code as law? Our short answer is that as law, the model codes enter the public domain and are not subject to the copyright holder's exclusive prerogatives."

What do you think?

Bad Pennies Keep Turning Up in NJ

Some waterproofing companies are just steaming piles...
From NJ.com

A COURT VICTORY

Last year, we shared a series of stories about Al Demola, a man who was tied to several waterproofing companies that allegedly took customer money and ran, or performed substandard work, on homes in New Jersey.

One couple we profiled had a court victory.

Balcony Railing Gives Way, Women Falls to Her Death in NY

A sad tale of a balcony railing giving way.

http://web.orange.co.uk/article/news/new_york_woman_killed_in_balcony_fall?DCSext.panellinkpos=4&DCSext.panellink=Latest+News

A woman on a first date has fallen to her death after the railing on her 17th-floor apartment balcony gave way.

Jennifer Rosoff went outside for a cigarette just before 1am on Thursday when she sat or leaned against the railing while talking to her date at her New York City apartment, police said.

The man said he warned her against it but the 35-year-old advertising executive fell moments later, authorities said.

Police spoke to the man and no foul play was suspected.

Ms Rosoff landed on building scaffolding on the first floor of the building on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Buildings officials took part of the broken railing to examine how it could have given way and plan to determine whether the other balconies are structurally sound.

Only the higher floor corner apartments of the building - built before World War II - have balconies.

Ms Rosoff worked at The New Yorker, Lucky Magazine and Cosmopolitan before recently joining a new company called TripleLift, according to her LinkedIn profile.

High-rise dramas are a staple of life in Manhattan and Thursday's was the third to make the news in recent days.

In 2010, after a 24-year-old social worker fell to his death when the railing gave way at his 24th-floor apartment terrace, the city conducted safety inspections on hundreds of residences.

Tenants at 16 buildings were ordered to stay off their balconies because they were deemed unsafe.

Some 800 building owners failed to file mandatory inspection reports on the safety of their balconies and terraces, officials found.

They are required to file every five years. For Ms Rosoff's building, the inspection report was last filed in February.
