The SoCal Chapter of RCI, Inc. invites you to learn, network, and enjoy the weather at the 12th Annual RCI Hawaii Winter Workshop at the Waikiki Beach Marriott
Resort on Monday January 23, 2012 and Tuesday January 24, 2012.
This program includes 11 sessions related to roofing, waterproofing and exterior walls and is designed to improve the skills and knowledge base of construction professionals (consultants, architects, engineers,and contractors) practicing in the the roofing, waterproofing, and exterior wall consulting fields.
Each attendee will receive a workbook with papers on each presentation, a total of 12.5 RCI CEHs and/or 12.5 AIA LUs, and breakfast and lunch for each day of the program.

Condensation Related Wood Rot and Mold Growth - The Under-Appreciated
Role of Air Intrusion, presented by Philip D. Dregger, PE, RRC, FRCI, Pacific Building Consultants, DNG Group, Concord, CA
Each year many seemingly well-designed and constructed roofs/walls experience wood rot and mold growth from excess accumulations of "condensation" even in moderate climates such as the San Francisco Bay Area. In many cases roof/wall "leaks" or "excessive interior Rh" are blamed when actually the cause is rapid infiltration of large amounts of interior air (not excessively humid) into insulated spaces which contain cold surfaces. The purpose of this presentation is to help Architects and Building Envelop professionals better understand the forces that work to drive interior air into framed roofs/walls, to identify common "moisture trap" conditions, and to offer tips to help avoid condensation related and damage.
The presentation will include:
Energy code and building code requirements (including recent changes) related to moisture vapor transmission and air/vapor retarders.
Discussions regarding how water vapor moves into and out of (or not) roof/ceiling and wall assemblies.
Design tools/guidelines available to Building Professionals

Several case histories showing how uncontrolled air intrusion led to
damage originally alleged to be due to other causes.
Designing Single-ply Membrane "Cool Roof" Systems for Service and Durability, presented by Thomas W. Hutchinson, AIA, CSI, FRCI, RRC, of the Hutchinson Design Group, US, Barrington, IL.
The growing popularity and code mandated use of cool roof membranes in the United States, a single source roofing requirement, conflicts with the concept of the roof as a system. The result has been unintended consequences: condensation under the membrane, mold growth on insulation facers, premature heat aging of the membrane and flashings due to reflected heat, loss of membrane durability, and building component degradation due to reflected UV rays, which have manifested themselves into multi-million dollar roof replacements of roof systems less than three year old, and the multi-million dollar lawsuits that ensue.
This presentation (and paper) will draw on his experience in the forensic investigation of failed low slope 'cool roofs', as well as his design and observation of those that have succeeded, so as to endeavour to explain the causation of unintended consequences associated with single-ply cool roof membranes, provide examples of cool roof system failures, provide guidance and recommendations on the design of single-ply membrane 'cool roof' system design solutions to achieve long-term service lives.
Locating Areas of Condensation Potential using Infrared Thermography, presented by Scott Wood of Scott Wood Associates, LLC, Gig Harbor, Washington
Of the three damage functions for buildings (heat, moisture and ultraviolet energy), moisture is typically at the top of the destructive list. Locating failure points for moisture entry into a building can be as simple as observing defects (holes) in the exterior cladding or as complicated as a destructive investigation of the building's enclosure system. A method such as infrared thermography provides a nondestructive solution to moisture discovery. Moisture moves in somewhat predictable manners; bulk, capillary, air-transported vapor and vapor diffusion. If in vapor form, it needs a cooler surface to condense into its bulk or liquid state.
This presentation (and paper) will discuss locating areas of condensation potential on the building enclosure using infrared thermography. Case studies will be presented describing the process of defining areas of the building that have a high probability of causing condensation.
Single Family Residential Air-Leakage Testing? Mandated? presented byDon DeGroot, Senior Consultant, IBA Consultants, Bellevue, WA.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has published results for building air tightness studies and concluded an air barrier system can reduce heating energy consumption by over 40%. New "Energy Conservation Codes" not only require the implementation of air-barrier systems, but now mandates the verification of the installed air barrier system via air leakage testing to ensure their performance.
As many architects and commercial builders might not be very familiar with these new code requirements, this presentation will discuss:
Properties of an Exterior Wall,
Basics of an Air Barrier System,
Performance Requirements,
Qualifying Materials as Air Barriers,
Test Standards and Procedures.
Good thing these new requirements only apply to any building or structure, or portions thereof, and only to those locations separating outdoor ambient conditions from interior spaces that are heated or mechanically cooled. Oops, I mean, like, I guess only 99.9% of ALL OCCUPIED BUILDINGS. If general contractors don't prepare for the blower door testing at the beginning of the process, they could be forced to go back and make expensive repairs, causing delays and unanticipated costs at the end of the project.
