| | Article Spotlight Using Desert Crete As An Alternative to Other Deck Coatings The article that ECHO broke their rules to publish! Most magazines don't publish 3-4 page "ads" for products. When ECHO read this article though, they changed their mind and featured our article on their cover. Read why HOA's will benefit by using Desert Crete on their decks. For more articles and information, see us at www.deckexpert.com. Excerpt-one of the most important qualities of the Desert Crete system, is the life span of the sealer it uses. Remember above where I explained the longer UV life span? Desert Crete's sealer has a UV life span of up to five years—two to three years longer than other products. What does this mean to an HOA? Simple math shows that a deck with a typical deck coating system with 1000 square feet needing to be cleaned and resealed every three years, at a cost of, say $2 per square foot, will cost $2,000 each time. If the life span of the coating is thirty years, you will need to reseal that deck ten times over the thirty years. At today's cost of $2,000 each time, multiply that by ten and the maintenance cost of that one deck is $20,000. Add in the initial cost of purchasing that deck and you have your true cost of ownership. Read our article by clicking here. Summlemental Article by Bill Leys DRY DECK OVER LIVING SPACE This article was published in the Journal of Light Construction several years ago. It describes the installation of the Desert Crete decking system. | | DESERT CRETE IS RATED CLASS "A" FOR FIRE-RESISTANCE AND CCW GETS GRADED "A" ON SERVICE Fire resistant Metal Roof, check, fire resistant Stucco siding, check. Failing fire resistant deck? Check. In this job profile, the old Dex-O-Tex system on the home was nearing 20 years old...there were splits and cracks in it and the age, the cost of renovation and the life expectancy left lead the owner and ourselves to the conclusion that the best course was replacement of the deck system with a new one. The home has a metal roof, stucco siding and triple glazed windows. It's situated on the top of a hill, with great views looking east over San Luis Obispo. With trees and brush below in open space, the home was a fire target. My discussion with the owner led to his concern that the decking system be fire resistant. Our Desert Crete system has a Class A fire rating as well as a seperate "One Hour" rating from ICC-ES as per their ICC report 1661 We showed the owner our report and that cleared that concern away. A local competitor who sells a polyurea spray on deck system was asked for an ICC-ES report but could not provide one. Their claim that they had a fire resistant "top coat" did not convince the owner... At the end, the client our selected Desert Crete on it's merits-ICC-ES report, Class A and One Hour rated, manufacturer with 70+ years being in business and a factory warranty. We stripped off the old Dex-O-Tex system, discarding it. New flashings were installed around the perimiter, and then new drains were installed. After the deck was prepared, the Desert Crete system went in. Our client loves his new deck and he loved the job performed by us so much he gave us an "A" grade on Angie's List. When the home was built some years ago, it was proclaimed the "Most Fire Resistant Home" in San Luis Obispo. With Desert Crete on the deck, it rightfully keeps that claim. Make Sure Your Deck and Home is Wildfire Safe With These Tips From- Firewise.org From Home Survival in Wildfire Prone Areas: Building Materials and Design Considerations "The vulnerability of decks to wildfire will depend on the decking material, any combustible materials stored under the deck or kept on the deck, abd the topography and amount and condition of vegetation leading to the deck. Even though non combustible decking products are available (eg Metal decking and lighweight concrete) many decking products are combustible. Untreated wood and wood treated with fire retardant, as well as plastic and wood-plastic composite products are all combustible and therefore vulnerable to ember and other wildfire exposures.
