SAN FRANCISCO — The owner and foreman of a roofing company have been indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the 2008 death of an employee who fell off the roof of an apartment building in San Francisco, San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris announced Monday.

Sam Hyung Goo Shim, owner of California C&R Inc., was indicted on April 13 by a criminal grand jury on charges of felony involuntary manslaughter and felony violation of the labor code in connection with the death of Antonio Martinez. Read the rest by clicking here

Painter Electrocuted at Work Site

A 48-year-old painter from the Pittsburgh area was electrocuted while painting a Habitat for Humanity complex last week.
Paul Thompson was working at the facility in New Kensington, Pa., about 2:50 p.m. Wednesday when he somehow came in contact with several high-voltage power lines and suffered cardiac arrest. Rescue workers reported that Mr. Thompson had been using a metal or fiberglass pole that touched the lines.
Reports varied on how the accident occurred. Some witnesses said that Mr. Thompson had been painting an exterior wall at the time, while others said that he had been working on the roof. Still others said that Mr. Thompson and his partner had been leaning out from the roof to spray-paint along the walls near the power lines.
The co-worker reportedly performed CPR on Mr. Thompson for several minutes until paramedics arrived. But neither he nor they were able to revive Mr. Thompson, and he was pronounced dead a short time later at Allegheny Valley Hospital, according to news reports.
Mr. Thompson was in his second day of employment with Modern Painting and Decorating, a family-owned residential painting company based in nearby Springdale, reports said. The company did not respond to a request for comment on Friday.
Habitat for Humanity rents space in the building for the ReStore, a retail outlet that sells home-improvement and decorating items as a fundraiser for the charity.

RIP Howard Schmidt- Sawyers Building Supply of Santa Maria

I was shocked today to learn of Howard Schmidt's sudden death last month of a heart attack. Sawyers is a small business I like to support and purchase some of my materials from and I'd always gotten along well with Howard.

Can't say I knew him well, but he was a nice guy and the construction community in Santa Maria/San Luis Obispo will certainly miss him.

Howard wasn't much older than I, and I guess his sudden passing should be a warning to us all to get a check up, stay healthy and most of all, appreciate every day that you get on this earth.

RIP Howard.

As I'm sure you've heard, many people have perished in the most horrible of ways from arsonists lighting fires that have become monsters of flames that are incinerating everything that burns.

Please take a minute of silence to say a prayer or however you wish to think of those who have lost their lives down under...God knows it could be our home or our life's next time that is in danger...may the person or persons who may be responsible be caught and brought to justice.

I have done work for Habitat, they are a worthy and noble organization. The world has lost a wonderful person.
