"Extinguished" Cigar in Potting Soil Ignites, Causing ONE MILLION in Damage!

Yeah, you read that right...the estimate is One Million dollars plus contents when an unidentified man placed a cigar into a potted plant to put it out. Most potting soil contains a lot of organic matter that can ignite, and this cigar ignited the soil in the pot, bursting into flame and causing enormous damage.

SIOUX FALLS, SD - 

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue is ruling an apartment building fire accidental, and officials don't plan on filing charges.  A cigar sparked the flames, which led to more about $1 million in fire damage. The fire started on a deck of the third floor of a building at Penbrooke Place. Insurance adjusters are still trying to determine whether the owners can save the building.

Another Day, Another Grill on a Deck Ignites the House

Sadly we report another home burned because of a grill on a deck...

A woman was trying to move a barbecue away from the home when it tipped over and flared, causing fire to spread to the deck and the back of the house, said Peter Andrews, a division commander with Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency.

No one was inside the home at the time.

“It was quite a spectacular fire when our crews got there,” Andrews said Thursday night. “The house was fully involved from the deck right up to the roofline because the siding and the Styrofoam underneath it are quite flammable.

Cigarette Carelessly Discarded in Potted Plant Burns Roof Deck

High levels of peat moss in bagged soil can ignite. Dispose of cigarettes in an ashtray.
