Westcoat Buys Mer-Kote Brand From Parex

Westcoat announces acquisition of the Mer-ko brand – Weather Deck and Shur Deck to be Featured Systems
Westcoat is pleased to announce the purchase of the Mer-Ko brand from parent company Parex. The purchase agreement, signed April 16, 2015, certifies Westcoat receiving full and exclusive rights to the Mer-Ko name and its two premier waterproof decking systems.
Mer-Ko, one of the original manufacturers of waterproofing systems has been producing widely used elastomeric deck coatings, waterproof membrane systems and underlayments since the mid-80s. Mer-Ko’s two primary systems, Weather Deck and Shur Deck will be re-introduced to the industry with wide-ranging manufacturing and technical support by Westcoat.
Weather Deck is a pedestrian walking deck system incorporating floating slip-sheet technology designed to isolate the waterproofing membrane and seamless decking from the substrate. This high performance system design eliminates concerns related to cracking and surface imperfections and offers superior durability.
Shur Deck is a metal lath reinforced walking deck and flat roof top deck system designed for use over plywood or concrete substrates. Shur Deck provides long-term durability and waterproofing protection using a latex modified polymer mortar to prevent cracking.
“Mer-Ko has always been a key player in the waterproof coatings industry with a loyal following,” said Paul Koury, president of Westcoat. “We couldn’t be more pleased to take ownership of the Mer-Ko brand and re-instill faith in the performance and longevity of their core systems. Our team intends to provide the same high level of quality control, technical support and customer service expected and experienced when doing business with Westcoat.”
Mer-Ko is available through U. S. distributors in the waterproofing, specialty coating business. For sales inquiries, contact Dean Jarmusch at 84

New Article "Building Waterproof Roof Decks" in Professional Deck Builder Magazine

July/August 2014 PDB

Professional Deck Builder July/August 2014 magazine issue is out with a story by Bill Leys on best practices to building and waterproofing decks.

Building Waterproof Roof Decks is a 6 page article that discusses the best practices builders should utilize in building construction when the deck is being framed and built. Click the link to download your free copy courtesy of Deck Builder magazine.

The article is an offshoot of our seminar we present to builders and architects on building and waterproofing decks. I've presented this seminar at JLC LIVE in Portland in 2013, Providence in 2014 and I'll be back again presenting in Portland in December 2014.

Dex-O-Tex, Mer-Kote and Westcoat Get Social...Social Media Savvy That Is

Browsing around in Facebook and Twitter, I found a few deck coating manufacturer's are getting on the Social Media bandwagon...

Dex-O-Tex (Crossfield Products), Westcoat Specialty Coating Systems and Mer-Kote have all set up Facebook pages...

The great thing about Facebook is that you can interact with your customers on a platform that allows clients to upload pics, comments and share their stuff with other users.

Visit these companies if you are a social media user...oh, and don't forget, DeckExpert.com is social too!

Waterproofdeckcoatingadvice.com's vistors hits new high!

Here's some stats from our web stat's

Continuing to prove it's worth, our website last month shattered the record number of visitors we got in March (3390 visits) and April's high of 3957 visitors by 291 visitors, to reach 4248 visitors!

While most are still visiting us with common key words and search phrases, I always like to look and see what uncommon searches led a visitor to us. Someone wanted to know "what kind of cement does Desert Crete use?" to find us. Someone else was looking for deck coating seminars.

Web searches always look for someone to install decking, someone was looking for Pli-Dek installers last month, another was looking for Dex-O-Tex at Home Depot.

Strange requests that led to a visit included "waterproofing a wine barrel". I can't tell you how to waterproof it, but I'll empty it for you...another searcher was looking for suntan lotion information and became so engrossed with our website they forgot about suntan lotion!

Someone else is looking to open a deck coating business, they wanted to know "how to run a successful deck coating business".

Seems someone always wants to know about problems on decks too; due diligence is recommended and we have the information to do it with...one wanted to know about urethane disadvantages and another wanted to know about Westcoat ALX performance. Another searcher wanted to know if Magnesite had asbestos in it. Answer is yes, up through the 60's and 70's Magnesite was made with asbestos...take all proper precautions!

Well I hope in filling your head with these trivial stats, we didn't remove anything of real value!

Reporting On JLC Live Residential Construction Show at Long Beach

The just ended JLC Live Residential Construction Show in Long Beach seemed to be well attended by my estimation on Thursday, May 15th, the day I attended the show.
Getting in early to check in as a speaker, I wandered down stairs in the seminar area, where the office of JLC staff is and where the speakers lounge is too.

I met Sherri Daniels, a dynamo who was making decisions and introducing me to staff and telling me about my seminar and room assignment all at once and never seemed out of sorts the whole time. "Just another day" Sherri deadpanned.

Leaving me off, I met up with Dave Frane, a senior editor at JLC magazine. We struck up a conversation on waterproofing and enjoyed some banter before heading up to the show floor.

Tons of peole milled about on the floor, a mix of trade show booths with live demo's of installations of windows, tiling, stair building and vendors selling tools and various software-estimating stuff mostly.

Wandering the floor, I met a number of vendors/manufacturer's with interesting products and ideas..including Landon Innovations of Moorpark CA's "Gorilla Gripper", (www.gorillagripper.com )a handy tool that allows one with ease to handle sheets of plywood and drywall materials with an ingenious handle that grips the piece. Simple Man Products booth had some ingenious "why didn't I think of that" products that makes life easier on many construction tasks; an electric box finder that one slips into the elec boxes, then puts up the drywall and you can easily find your placing to cut out the hole for the box. Check out their line of stuff at
www.simplemanproducts.com

Shower and bath waterproofing products were represented well, the market for easy to install and waterproof tile showers and baths is ripe for change, leaks in these areas contribute to a lot of construction defect issues like decks do. Nobel Company amongst others has a line of foam cast tile ready forms and pre-sloped floors along with their all in one waterproofing sheet membrane for tiling, which also integrates a crack isolation membrane in it as well. They claim it will work with exterior tiled balconies too. I'll have to do some research...the material looks interesting.

Wandering further on the show floor, I came across the only actual deck coating manufacturer to smartly buy a booth and meet 100's if not thousands of potential customers who may need deck coating on one of their projects (pretty dang likely they will!)and now are on Westcoat Specialty Coatings mailing and contact list. I met Curtis at the booth who had some of Westcoat's cool water based stains and other flooring finishes, along with their deck coating lines and waterproofing.

I watched Michael Byrne do a live tiling demonstration for a while, then went in search of lunch at the speakers lounge.

Down at the speakers area, I met a local from Atascadero-Turko Semmes, of Semmes & Co Builders, who was giving a talk on green building. Then as I'm sitting across from a guy, Tim Faller, who sports a JLC Live badge that says "Westerly, RI" as his hometown...I find out that a couple of Rhode Islanders are out here for the show -stair guru Mike Kennedy is giving demo's on the floor. Being from RI, it was funny to hear the other speakers, many of whom are on their 3rd or 4th show, ribbing us on "are akshents". (our accents)It was nice to see that an accent on bringing in California based speakers was made with great success. I joined an esteemed group of caring craftsmen, including Dennis Allen of Allen Associates in Santa Barbara, Michael Byrne of Los Olivios, Jay Elbettar of Newport Beach, Gary Katz, Reva Kussmaul, Michael McCutcheon of Berkeley, Turko Semmes of Atascadero and Bill Robinson of Arroyo Grande.

I walked around the show again before heading over to my hotel, the Queen Mary, for a quick refresh before my seminar at 430.
